Meriodoc is not the brightest crayon in the box, but he has more than what Pippin has. This is all we know until we get further in the story, Merry is quiet brave himself,

Wow, not many people come here and express their ideas. Well I guess I will. My comment before, was very harsh about Merry, I regret to say that Merry wasn't the brightest crayon in the box. Actually he is quite intelligent, but he doesn't show it. He's more of a prankster and loves to do so with his partner in crime Pippin.
