HOW FISH CAME TO BE
One day Eru was eating a light garden salad in his garden. It was a warm sunny day, but suddenly a breeze began to blow and quickly the warm day turned cool and rainy. As it was raining, Eru continued eating his salad but was slightly annoyed by the sudden change in weather conditions. Soon there was a violent downpour and his salad bowl filled up with water and got all soggy and slimy. "This is no good!" Eru yelled, flinging the bowl from the table. The bowl landed upside down on the grass with all the salad in one big heap. Eru looked at the heap of lettuce laying on the ground. "You disgusting thing of the earth," he snarled at it. "You are no good to eat! You are as dead as a fly under water!" But Eru desperately wanted his lettuce back so he could eat his salad, but it lay rotten in the grass. "How am I to eat you when you are all rotten?" he wondered. "The only way to make you unrotten is to make you alive." So he used his magical powers and made the lettuce come alive. But it wasn't what he expected. Instead of turning back into his nice crunchy fresh garden salad, it remained slimy and in one big piece. But it wiggled around in the grass, flipping its tail. "You disgust me!" said Eru, so he kicked the thing into the river, where it swam away on the currents. Many years later this being was found and eaten, and miraculously it had a very good flavor when you added salt. It also was very flippery and hard to catch, not to mention very inconsistant, for it swam very quickly in many directions. In all, the words Flippery, Inconsistant, Salt, and Hard to catch made the word 'fish'. When Eru found out about this spectacular creation 'fish' he decided that indeed it was a splendor, but not for the likes of the Gods. Instead he put it on Middle Earth where all types of beings could use this creature to fulfill their hunger. Of course, as long as they had some salt to go with it.
